Ways that dogs can help people
A dog can help you meet other people. It is way to make connections as a natural
conversation starter helping to ease people out of social isolation and shyness.
Pets in the home help Alzheimer's patients have less anxious outbursts. Pets for the elderly is good [if they are able to care for them] by providing exercise and companionship. People who have Aids that have pets are far less to suffer from depression. Children with brain injuries and mentally challenged children can relate to dogs and cats etc. Dog help to alert people with epilepsy and prevent injuries to people with seizures. Dogs are trained to push a button on the phone and call 911. Dogs can protect children and families. When people are out with their dogs, others have a reason to stop and talk to you giving
you a chance to meet more people.
Dogs are more susceptible to overheat. A dog's normal body temperature is 100-102 degrees. Their sweat glands are on the nose and pads of their paws. They pant and drink water to cool down. Be sure you always have fresh cool water available. Bring the dog in the house in hot temperatures. Keep the dog and the water in a shaded area in the yard--the hot sun can quickly make the water too hot to drink. The dog is lower to the ground and heat is radiant.
Home power outage
Leave your dog home with lots of water. Be sure your neighbor or pet
sitter has your house key so that they can check on your pets.
Dogs can get sunburn--protect your dog from sunburn
Check the temperature of the sidewalk with your hand before walking
your dog-if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws. If you
have to walk the dog, be sure you walk him/her on the grass. Best time
to walk the dog is early morning or evening. Give your dog small amounts of
water frequently on your walk. Never leave the dog alone in a car. Dampening a
bandana with cold water and tying it around your dog's neck can provide a cooling effect for your dog on a walk or play. To keep their paw pads
cool, use a spray bottle with cooled water and spray their paw pads.
Dogs at the beach
Be sure you have a shaded spot for your dog. Sand reflects the sun and heats
up your dog--always have fresh water with you. Do not let the dog drink salt
water which can dehydrate your dog. Make sure you rinse the salty ocean
water off of your dog.
Dogs in the pool
Make sure to teach your dog where the steps and ladder are and how to swim
to them--you don't want the dog to exhaust itself trying to find a way to get out.
Be sure the dog is supervised when in the pool.
If a kitty is not eating, feed it a jar or two of Gerber baby food #2. in 2.5oz. jar
The Gerber #2 doesn't have garlic or onion, which is not good
for kitties. Stick to beef, ham, turkey or chicken. You can spoon
feed or put the baby food on a saucer. One easy way to give a
cat a pill is to crush it into a small amount of Gerber baby food--turkey
or chicken flavor is preferred. Most cats can't resist this and will
gobble it right up. Ask the vet if it's okay to crush the pill first.
