HOW TO KEEP PETS SAFE DURING THE HOLIDAYS

12/15/2023

Pets are attracted to bright lights, shining ornaments, and dangling tinsel, decorations can be hazardous to pets. Use an enclosed tree stand, base pine tree water can be poisonous. Be sure the tree is secured to the wall with strong wire because a toppling tree can cause serious injuries to cats and dogs.
Twinkling lights and electrical wiring pose a significant danger by ingestion or contact. When you are not home or around unplug lights and electrical decorations. Pets should be confined away from any room containing a lit Hanukkah menorah, or candles.
Keep plants out of pet's reach like poisonous, berries of the mistletoe, hibiscus, holly, Christmas roses, and poinsettia.
Milk chocolate can cause a pet upset stomach, and dark baker's chocolate, and chocolate gold coins contain high levels of theobromine and caffeine. Ingesting those types of chocolate could be fatal.
The foil wrappers on chocolate gold coins can also cause intestinal issues if digested.
Xylitol sugar substitute causes a dog's blood sugar to drop quickly. It can also cause liver failure if not treated properly.
Macadamia nuts if digested dogs experience severe weakness in their back legs, appearing paralyzed. Takes 3 days to recover from this condition.
Bread dough when the dog ingested it continues to rise, causing an intestinal blockage.

The artificial sweetener xylitol can be deadly if consumed by a dog or cat. Yeast dough causes problems for pets, painful gas, and potentially dangerous bloating.
Keep the trash away from your pets behind a locked door.
Keep decorative plants away some flowers can be toxic to pets.
If you believe your pet has eaten something it shouldn't have call your vet or the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline at 888-426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661. Signs to look for vomiting, diarrhea, pain, depression, and changes in behavior.

SWITCHING UP THE DOG KIBBLE

11/10/2023

Your dog will probably enjoy the opportunity to savor different flavors throughout the year. You can rotate weekly or monthly. This approach helps prevent overexposure to a single kind of protein, and it can help alleviate issues such as allergies. It's good to give your dog what's in the season spring veggies like peas and carrots. Summertime fresh spinach, a small amount of sweet corn from your garden. Autumn fiber-rich pumpkin or squash. Winter legumes, sweet potatoes, and potatoes.

TRACHEAL COLLAPSE IN DOGS

10/20/2023

It is a tube that is held open with circular rings. When those rings break down and can no longer hold the windpipe open, it will collapse the trachea. It does not show up until the dog is middle age, it is genetic, and it is more common in toy breeds, like Yorkies, Poodles, Pomeranians, Maltese, Pugs, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, and Chihuahuas. It can show up in any breed at any age.

Signs and symptoms to look for are honking coughs which appear to be trying to cough something up, but there is no object, the irritation to the throat lining causes inflammation that produces that sensation. Unfortunately, pets often become anxious and scared which causes them to breathe more rapidly. The best thing for your pet is to hold and calm the pet until the breathing quiets and the dog begins to relax. The pet owner should seek help from the veterinarian. There could be other medical issues that are complicating the problems. Oftentimes collapsing trachea in a dog will not show any symptoms until another medical problem exacerbates the issue. Simple changes like using a harness, avoiding vigorous activities, taking walks at times of day that are less hot and humid, and avoiding exposure to smoke and other irritants can make a significant difference.

BRINGING HOME A NEW PUPPY

10/2/2023

When you bring a new puppy home and he or she starts jumping to get your attention do not pick him or her up. If you pick up the puppy he or she has learned that to get your attention, all he or she needs to do is jump. This bad behavior is your fault for not teaching your dog to sit.
The same holds true for the kitten that jumps up on things. It is critical that you prevent and correct such problems.

It is best to take the puppy at a young age to dog school.

Young pets are most impressionable from 8 weeks to 18 weeks of age. Responding NO with firmness will prevent the pet from repeating the behavior. If you are consistent in your behavior and actions, your pet will learn quickly. Consistently reward good behavior with a treat and affection.
Sometimes behavior problems can be caused by medical issues, lack of training, or both.
If you suspect a medical issue see a veterinarian.
The pet can be very irritable if it has poor hearing, vision, dental, or arthritis problems.

HOW TO STORE PET FOODS PROPERLY

9/22/2023

Be sure to check the expiration dates. The food doesn't go bad the day after expiration. You don't want to buy so much food at one time. Buy a new bag of food every four to six weeks. Place the bag directly into the pet food container the bag is designed to help keep the food fresh. Also, roll the bag tightly and put a bag clip on it. Store in a cool and dry location. The same applies to treats.
Always keep the original bag in the event the food gets recalled.
Throw away any foods that appear spoiled or contaminated. Throw away any bulging cans or foods that look or smell. Pick up any uneaten portions of wet food after four hours. Dry food shouldn't be out in the bowl for more than 24 hours.
Wash bowls once a week.

8/28/2023

Ingredients that are toxic to pets include ammonia, bleach, chlorine, formaldehyde, and isopropyl alcohol. However, the level of toxicity and degree of illness can vary significantly based on the concentration, how much the pet is exposed to, and the route of exposure (ingested, inhaled, contact).

Common clinical signs of cleaning product toxicity in pets when inhaled include:
Sneezing, Coughing, Watery eyes, Trouble breathing, Increased rate of breathing, Open-mouth breathing (in cats), and Bluish-colored gums.

Common clinical signs of cleaning product toxicity in pets when contact with the skin occurs are redness and irritation, Sores or blisters, Rash, and Chemical burns.

Common clinical signs of cleaning product toxicity in pets when contact with the skin occurs are redness and irritation, Sores or blisters, Rash, and Chemical burns. Other products that may contain ammonia: are furniture polish, toilet bowl cleaner, oven cleaner, and stainless-steel cleaner.

Bleach and chlorine are chemically identical. The difference is their concentration: Bleach is more likely to have a 3%–6% concentration, whereas pool chlorine can be a 10%–12% concentration. The toxic ingredient most commonly appears on product labels as sodium hypochlorite.

Phenol may appear on a product label under many names, including butylated hydroxytoluene, benzenol, carbolic acid, phenolic acid, Bakelite, and alkylphenols.

If your pet was exposed to a cleaning product, this may be a medical emergency. Act quickly to determine if they need to be seen at the emergency room.
When possible, switching to pet-safe cleaning products reduces the risk of exposure to toxic chemicals.
Locate the product label and contact your veterinarian or one of the animal poison control centers (Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661 or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435).

DOG BITE PREVENTION

8/11/2023

Dogs are more likely to bite if they are sick or in pain.                                                    Try to expose dogs to new situations slowly and for short periods of time, arrange for low-stress interactions, and give plenty of praise and rewards for good behavior. Devote your time to interact with your dog through positive training techniques. Go outside with your dog on a leash training and allow your dog to socialize. Slowly arrange play dates with other dogs and people.                                Slowly increase the amount of time. This will help them get used to being with other dogs. Be very careful about approaching other people's pets.
Always ask permission from the owner before approaching a dog, and look for signs that the dog wants to interact with your dog.                                        Respect the dog that wants to be left alone.

Avoid walking dogs and playing outside with pets during the hottest hours of the day. Give the dog plenty of fresh water and add ice cubes, put the bowl by the fan. Dog temperatures should not reach over 104 degrees.
When the weather is hot give the dog cold water, use a freezing cold ice pack, find your dog a cool spot to rest, go for a swim in the pool, hose down your dog, mist your dog with cold water, and turn the fan on. Provide shade in gardens and outdoor areas with a breeze blowing during the hottest hours of the day.
You can make your own cool mat with a damp towel, regularly refreshing it in cold water if it starts to get warm.
If the dog is suffering a heatstroke before getting the dog to the vet.
To lower the dog's body temperature wet your dog's coat or drench a towel in cool water but not really cold and drape the towel over your dog.
Use a cooling dog collar or cooling vest.
Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car for any period of time. 120 in a matter of minutes even with the windows partially open.
Your pet can quickly suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke or suffocation.

The dog hearing is one of the dog's strongest senses. Music will enhance your dog's quality of life. Music will help in reducing anxiety, block environmental sounds like fireworks, sirens, and thunder, and reduce heart rate, blood pressure, etc. Music will help puppies and dogs to relax and sleep. Also dogs with separation anxiety and anxious dogs that are fearful of noises.   Swapp out the music you're playing on a daily basis to keep their mood consistent throughout the day.
The music you want to play, is Classical, New Age, Soundscape, Smooth Jazz, and Reggae.
Dogs have a phobia called storm phobia comes from sensory stimulation like thunderclaps, lightning, and changes in the barometric pressure. When a storm hits play calming music.

6/30/2023

Neutering or spade increases your pet's chances for a longer, healthier life. Prevent some serious health problems, and may reduce many of the behavioral problems with the mating instinct.
The best age to spade or neutered a dog or a cat is 6 months old.
The female dog should be spayed before her first heat, it reduces her risk of mammary gland tumors.
And it also prevents the heat cycle from occurring in the future.
Female and male dogs have no risks of infections, cancers, or diseases of the uterus. Also reduced the risk of prostate and breast cancer.

MICROCHIPPING OUR PETS IS VERY IMPORTANT

6/23/2023

Microchipping is great for pet safety. If the pet goes missing it becomes strenuous for people to find the lost pet. If you find a lost pet take it to a vet office or animal shelter and have them scan the microchip.
The microchip is inserted beneath the shoulder blade of your pet with a simple injection. The procedure does not stress or hurt the dog. After the procedure is done be sure to enroll your pet's ID code with your contact information then a scanner is used to be sure that the microchip is working so the dog can be identified.

CAT OR DOG BED CLEANING

9/2/2022

Take a look at your pet's bed if you see a lot of soiling, chewing, and roughhousing. If you throw it in the wash and it doesn't come clean or it's been torn beyond repair, it may be time to replace it. You don't want your pets to be chewing off any pieces it could choke them. Use a waterproof, washable cover. Before you wash their bedding make sure you remove the pet fur and dirt and pretreat any stains or urine with a quality enzymatic cleaner before you put it in the washer. It's always good to wash in a cold gentle cycle to remove stains. Use sensitive skin detergent best to avoid respiratory and skin irritation you can also use sanitizer. Be sure to let it dry thoroughly before you allow your pets to use it. Pet beds should be cleaned every couple of weeks.

HEART-WORMS

8/12/2022

It takes just one bite from a mosquito that’s infected with heart-worms larvae to jeopardize your pet’s health and welfare. And if your pet becomes infected, the heart-worm disease is often debilitating and can be fatal if it’s not treated. The majority of dogs who go untreated will not survive. Cats and ferrets are vulnerable to heartworm. It is best to keep them all on year-round heart-worm preventative. It's more common for heartworms in cats to die before they reach full maturity. The best way to keep the cats healthy is to keep them on heart-worm medication because there are no drugs or treatments for heart-worm. House cats are also at risk of heart-worms if not treated in case a mosquito comes in with disease-carrying.
It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to infect a pet. Mosquitos are highly adaptable and will find other places to breed even during drought.
Areas with standing water, including ponds, lakes, and swimming pools, can provide breeding conditions for mosquitos.
Natural remedies are not recommended as alternatives not effective.
It's less expensive to prevent canine heartworm than it is to treat it.

DOG SOCIALIZATION

6/24/2022

The best time to socialize your dog is between the age of eight weeks and four months old, is so important for the development. Socialization helps the dog be stress-free and it allows the dog to be around different people and environment. When taking the dog for frequent walks it allows the dog to smell, listen to the different sounds, dogs do need physical activity, and mental activity. It teaches them to behave around other people and animals, but some dogs lose their social skills because they're too isolated. If your dog wasn't socialized as a puppy it doesn't mean he/she should not socialize and play with other pets. Some dogs are shy because they may have been mistreated or just timid. In either case you need to work with your dog according to his/her pace in meeting people and other dogs, that might take time

POISONOUS TOADS

5/27/2022

Amphibians secrete a mucus through their skin to help them evade predators, but in some species this slime is toxic. The Colorado/Sonoran River Toad, Marine Toad and Cane or Bufo Toad can kill by affecting the heart and central nervous system. To avoid pet interactions with poisonous toads:
Teach pets to “leave it” and not chase critters.
Observe when investigating uncharted territory.

FIRST AID FOR SNAKE BITES

5/20/2022

These first-aid practices should be implemented in the event of a snake bite: For non-venomous snake bites:                                                                                        Wash the wound with antibacterial soap and observe. If red or warm to the touch, get to the veterinarian for antibiotics or other treatment. If unsure, assume it was a venomous bite:
Keep bite wound below level of heart to slow absorption; do not wash or massage area.
Keep animal calm since the faster he breathes and circulates blood, the faster the venom moves.
Call ahead and get to veterinary care for treatment. Do NOT:
Cut the bite and try to suck out the poison.
Manipulate the bitten area or allow the pet to move about freely. Place an ice pack over the bite.

Remove anything that attract flies—fallen fruit, pet feces, uncovered garbage—and use fly traps.                                                                                                          When pets are outdoors, apply petroleum jelly or Avon® Skin-So-Soft lotion to tips of ears.                                                                                                                            Some swear flies will not bite an animal who drinks vinegar and recommend adding 1 Tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar to a pet’s water bowl.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO TAKE MY PET TO THE VET

4/8/2022

A routine examination on pets that are healthy is a good preventive. Puppies and Kittens need to see a vet every 3-4 weeks until they complete all of their vaccinations. Healthy young adult cats and dogs should be seen at least annually. Senior and geriatric pets should be seen more often by a vet to help catch early signs of disease. Senior cats with chronic conditions should be seen more frequently.                                                                                                                       Your dog may get other vaccines to prevent illnesses like kennel cough, and outdoor cats should get feline leukemia vaccines. Bring in a stool sample from your pet, to have checked for intestinal parasites. Mention any changes you've seen in your pet.
